The other night I was watching a special on Larry King Live about the hit T.V show "The Biggest Loser." The winner, Bill Germanakos, along with his twin brother Jim were both guests on the show after each lost about 150 lbs and completely changed his life forever.
The show was truly powerful and inspiring.
Something that Bill said struck me as very interesting.
He said, "I didn’t really understand how to eat healthy. What I thought was healthy really wasn’t."

Weight loss motivation stories don’t always stand the test of time but this one does and it is right off the pages of the hit TV show, The Biggest Loser. In season 4 a set of twins came to the Biggest Loser ranch with hundreds of pounds to lose and high expectations.
This article shares with you the motivational story behind the Weight Loss Twins who in 8 months transformed their physical bodies and went on to "pay it forward".
Bill and Jim Germanakos were 2 of 18 people selected to join the Biggest Loser Ranch a couple of years ago. Not only did they have a large amount of weight to lose but they also were facing health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol which put them at risk of heart disease, a condition they knew personally having to watch their father die at an early age from this disease.
The brothers started the season on the Black Team which made them members of the sometimes brutal Jillian Michaels group.
Life on the ranch brought them much success and they pulled on each other’s strength greatly but then in week 5 Jim was eliminated. Which meant he had to return home to continue to lose on his own.
This would have been enough for anyone to throw in the towel but not Jim. By the time he came back to the finale he had lost an incredible 132 more pounds taking him from a starting weight of 361 pounds down to 175 and giving him the edge over all of the other "eliminated" contestants and a cash prize of $100,000.
Bill stayed on the ranch for the entire season managing to avoid getting "pushed below the yellow line" where he was vulnerable to being kicked off and showed up at the finale an incredible 164 pounds lighter.
The brothers are truly one of the best weight loss motivation stories to emerge from the show but where did this motivation come from? You can argue that being in the spotlight adds to the motivation but the spotlight doesn’t really start for the contestants until after they have lost the majority of their weight and the shows begin to air.
For the twins the motivation came from three things.

In the never ending battle to loose weight people have tried all sorts of calorie cutting diets, energy boosting pills and the latest “Fat Buster” exercise machine seen on late night TV. During this quest to burn off the fat they come to realize that maybe what they are doing is not working as well as advertised. The reality is that if we give our bodies the nutrition that they need by eating healthy nutrient dense foods we’ve already won half the battle.
What happens when we eat healthy nutritious food? Our bodies respond by increasing our metabolism, which in turn burns away extra fat. Now while this is rather simplified and loosing weight can require a little more effort as far as exercising and eating right in a nut-shell this is the first best step to loosing excess weight.
One of the first things we must understand is how our body uses and stores energy. Our bodies get their energy from the foods we eat but that energy comes in many different forms. We can get it from protein, carbohydrates and fat and there are different forms of these as well. It’s how our bodies use these various forms of energy that affect our metabolism.
In the case of fat our bodies have very little trouble converting them directly into fat stores for future use. Because fats tend to get sent directly to fat storage the body uses very little energy, or calories, accomplishing this. This is also true of simple carbohydrates, usually in the form of refined sugars, found throughout most of our diets. The body not only uses very little energy converting these refined sugars into fat the huge amounts of sugar the average person eats causes the body to release larger amounts of insulin to deal with this sugar overload. These higher insulin levels stimulate our appetites to eat more and increase the rate at which we store excess calories as fat tissue.
Foods that increase metabolism include those foods that are high in complex carbohydrates and proteins. Why? Because complex carbohydrates and proteins require more energy for the body to break down and use. This results in extra calories being burned just for the sake of digestion and cellular metabolism.
Foods that are high in complex carbohydrates also help to increase our metabolism in another way. Because complex carbohydrates take longer to break down by the bodies digestive system the release of the caloric energy is spread out over a longer period of time. This results in less insulin being released into the blood stream and a more balanced energy flow during our waking hours resulting in less snacking on sugary sweets. Sugars and fats on the other hand tend to cause energy spikes followed by a low period during which we are tempted to eat more of these fat producing foods to re-energize ourselves.
Most of the complex carbohydrates we eat come from fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables can help increase our metabolism in one other way. They are high in fiber and our bodies’ burn more calories digesting fiber then just about anything else. In fact it is theorized that many fruits and vegetables fall into the “negative calorie” categories of foods. A negative calorie food is one that actually takes more calories to digest then it actually contains. The resulting increase in metabolism from eating negative calorie foods can help burn away excess body fat stores and result in a gradual weight loss. When combined with a moderate exercise program the weight loss and metabolism increase can be even greater.
As you can see the foods that increase metabolism are healthy, nutrient dense foods. Steering clear of processed foods and refined sugars is key to not only increasing metabolism but also living a healthy fat free life.

Many foods increase metabolism, and that’s great news. Why? Because you can eat delicious foods AND boost your metabolism at the same time!
The following foods increase metabolism by raising your body temperature. The scientific name for this is "thermogenic" ("therm" means heat, and "-genic" means to create). Some studies show that these foods triple your body’s ability to burn calories for fuel instead of storing them for fat! That’s pretty impressive.
Here are the most well-known foods that increase metabolism.
Cayenne Pepper
This spicy pepper is used in many Mexican dishes, but you can incorporate it into just about any recipe. Its most common form is a powder.
It’s probably most obvious with cayenne pepper that spicy foods increase metabolism by raising your body temperature. So here’s a tip: just use a pinch to achieve its metabolism-boosting benefit, and to ensure that you don’t make your recipe TOO spicy! I use a pinch in my deviled eggs, add it to salsa, and I’ve even made a spicy chocolate sauce for duck that uses cayenne pepper.

Ginger

You can use ginger in its fresh (root) form or in powder form. You can find the fresh root in the produce section of your grocery store. Always peel it before you use it. Just break off a 1 to 2-inch piece, and use a paring knife or peeler to remove the skin. Then you can either grate it or slice it. If you grate it, try adding it to smoothies or salad dressings.
Cinnamon
This spice can be used in just about anything sweet, but it also adds an exotic flavor to savory recipes.
Recent studies have shown that cinnamon helps to control insulin levels, which directly affects whether your body stores or burns fat.
You can be quite creative with this spice, and you’ll find that you’re adding it to everything! Try putting about 1/2 a teaspoon in your coffee grounds before you brew the coffee. Sprinkle it over ice cream, or over your toast. I create a mix of cinnamon and stevia powder and use that for my toast and lots of other sweet treats.
